Exciting Growth: SAP Unveils New Campus in Bengaluru, Strengthening Its Global R&D Leadership!
SAP has officially inaugurated its new campus in Bengaluru, marking a significant expansion as the company’s second-largest research and development hub outside its German headquarters. Located in Devanahalli, near the city’s international airport, the India Innovation Park spans 41 acres and is expected to operate in several phases. Currently, 27 acres are functional, with an eventual capacity to accommodate up to 14,000 employees. Already, 3,200 SAP employees have settled in, and the first phase will see another 4,500 employees relocate.
Phase two of the campus has been greenlit, with construction set to begin shortly, targeting completion by the second or third quarter of 2028. The total investment for the campus exceeds 194 million euros. This facility is SAP’s second in Bengaluru, following its first campus in the city’s Whitefield area.
Sindhu Gangadharan, Managing Director of SAP Labs India and Head of Customer Innovation Services at SAP, emphasized the campus’s collaborative ethos during the inauguration event, stating, “The [Innovation Park] is designed to bring together our customers, partners, academia, startups, and communities. For us, this is the beating heart of co-innovation.”
SAP joins a growing roster of tech giants enhancing their presence in India, particularly in Bengaluru, which now ranks as the fourth-largest tech hub globally, behind Silicon Valley, Boston, and London. Earlier this year, Google unveiled its new campus in Bengaluru, while Microsoft is developing its largest R&D center in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
In recent years, many tech firms have established research and development centers or Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India, transforming these facilities into critical nodes for business functions such as IT, automation, and manufacturing. Bengaluru houses 875 GCCs, accounting for 34% of the country’s GCC workforce. According to a report by IT industry body Nasscom and consulting firm Zinnov, the market for India’s GCC sector is projected to soar from $64.6 billion in FY 2024 to between $99 billion and $105 billion by 2030.
In March, SAP emerged as Europe’s most valuable listed company, overtaking luxury brand LVMH and Novo Nordisk in market capitalization after refocusing its business model towards cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The company derives a significant portion of its revenue from cloud services, and it aims to harness AI to enhance operational efficiencies. With enterprise solutions spanning cloud offerings, expense management, supply chain management, and analytics, SAP’s products service over 440,000 customers globally, including 98 of the world’s top 100 companies, representing a combined contribution of over 80% of global commerce.
In India, SAP employs over 17,000 people across multiple cities, including Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi, with more than 40% of its global R&D workforce based in the country. This strategic move reinforces SAP’s commitment to innovation and collaboration, positioning it well within the rapidly evolving tech landscape of India.
