Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the newly constructed Kamrup District Judicial Court Complex in Amingaon, Guwahati, on Friday. This modern facility, built at a cost of ₹52.25 crore, boasts 15 courtrooms and incorporates digital and ICT-enabled services, creating a robust and integrated judicial infrastructure.
The complex features essential digital services such as e-filing, video conferencing, and case tracking, all designed to streamline trials, minimize paperwork, and enhance transparency within the judicial system. Additionally, it includes judges’ chambers, waiting areas for litigants, and lounges for lawyers.
During the inauguration, CM Sarma highlighted the progress made in improving crime-related indicators in Assam, expressing a goal to achieve a 60% conviction rate over the next five years. He noted the delays caused by prolonged case pendency affect both complainants and the accused, urging legal professionals and institutions to embrace technology, particularly artificial intelligence, to enhance judicial efficiency and expedite case resolutions.
He also announced the state government’s initiative to recruit more public prosecutors to bolster the conviction process. Furthermore, Sarma appealed to the Gauhati High Court and the National Judicial Academy for assistance in training new legal recruits to facilitate the quicker resolution of pending cases. He mentioned that construction of a new Gauhati High Court building in North Guwahati is anticipated to commence within a year.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar of the Gauhati High Court and Law Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass, alongside several judges and senior officials from both the judiciary and state administration.
The Kamrup District Judicial Court Complex represents Assam’s broader initiative to modernize its judicial system and improve access to justice through digital integration.
