Empowering Station Directors: Key Decisions During Festival Rush
Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced today that 73 major railway stations experiencing heavy traffic will appoint a Station Director. This official will be empowered to make immediate decisions to alleviate congestion during the festive season. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Vaishnaw outlined plans to improve crowd management through the installation of wider Foot Over Bridges and the development of Permanent Holding Areas outside these stations. A pilot project for these Holding Areas is currently underway at five stations.
To further enhance safety and efficiency, major stations will be equipped with CCTV surveillance, walkie-talkies, public announcement systems, and dedicated war rooms to manage large crowds effectively. Mr. Vaishnaw emphasized that only passengers with confirmed tickets will have direct access to the platforms. Those holding ticketless or waitlisted tickets will be required to wait in an Outside Waiting Area until their train arrives. These measures aim to streamline operations and improve the overall travel experience during peak times.
