GMC Launches Urgent Eviction Drive in Guwahati Ahead of Independence Day
In a decisive effort to reclaim public spaces and enhance the city’s appearance ahead of Independence Day, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) initiated a citywide eviction drive targeting illegal businesses operating under footpaths and flyovers. The operation commenced on Thursday, focusing specifically on the heavily congested areas of Jalukbari and Ganeshguri.
Working in collaboration with the city police, the GMC team removed approximately 15 to 20 unauthorized stalls. Many of these establishments had operated for years without the necessary permits. Special attention was given to food stalls located beneath the Ganeshguri flyover, which local officials noted had been contributing to both environmental and traffic issues.
“These stalls have become a serious problem,” stated a GMC official during the operation. “They not only encroach on public spaces but also lead to significant littering. Although we recently reconstructed the footpaths, shopkeepers continue to pollute the area, disregarding designated waste bins. This issue has escalated to the point where it is affecting the city’s image and hygiene,” he added.
The official also addressed rumors concerning potential leniency or corruption among some GMC personnel. “There have been claims of an understanding between us and the Ganeshguri market vendors, which is completely false. Despite having deployed Municipal Corporation staff, vendors continue to reinstall their stalls. However, with police support, we are now enforcing strict measures. Henceforth, any attempt to re-establish shops in these no-vending zones will face immediate consequences,” he warned.
The GMC’s actions are part of a broader initiative aimed at improving the aesthetics and functionality of Guwahati ahead of Independence Day celebrations. The corporation has pledged that similar operations will take place in various parts of the city in the coming days, ensuring that public spaces remain clean, accessible, and safe for all residents and visitors.
