India Honors Kargil Heroes: A Tribute on Vijay Diwas
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in honoring the armed forces on July 26, marking the 24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. This day commemorates the Indian Army’s successful Operation Vijay, which concluded on July 26, 1999, after a nearly three-month-long battle against Pakistan in the Kargil conflict. In a heartfelt social media post, Murmu highlighted the extraordinary valor and dedication of Indian soldiers, emphasizing that their sacrifices continue to inspire the nation.
Various ceremonies were held nationwide, including a significant event at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass. Over 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives during the conflict, which began with an incursion by Pakistani forces into Indian territory. Modi reflected on the courage of those soldiers who laid down their lives defending India’s honor.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute, praising the bravery and determination displayed by military personnel. He stated, “Their supreme sacrifice during the Kargil war is a timeless reminder of the unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces. India shall remain forever indebted to their service.” Singh, alongside other military leaders, paid respects at the National War Memorial.
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan expressed that Kargil Vijay Diwas serves not only as a remembrance of the past but also as a source of inspiration for the future. He stated that India’s readiness and unity, particularly demonstrated through recent military operations like Operation Sindoor, underscore the resilience against adversaries’ deceit and aggression.
In his speech at the memorial, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi affirmed the significance of the victory and elaborated on the decisive success achieved through Operation Sindoor. He emphasized that India has drawn a firm line, ensuring that any malevolent intentions within its borders would not be tolerated. “Operation Sindoor was a message to Pakistan, reaffirming that supporters of terrorism will not go unpunished,” he explained.
Dwivedi noted that recent surgical strikes in Pakistan targeted high-value terrorist assets without causing collateral damage. This decisive military action followed a profound national tragedy, the Pahalgam terror attack, indicating India’s shift from mourning to resolute action.
He remarked on the collective faith of the Indian populace and the government’s support, asserting, “Any power that challenges India’s sovereignty will face a strong response. This is the new normal for India.” The Indian Army is evolving into a formidable force, now including specialized units for logistics and combat support.
The day serves as a reminder not only of the past sacrifices but also as a commitment to future vigilance and preparedness against any threats to India’s territorial integrity.
