Sitharaman noted that for the past century, multilateral institutions have always had a defined role. However, she expressed concerns that these institutions are now at a crossroads, questioning their future and how they can adapt to emerging changes in the financial ecosystem, particularly regarding digital currencies.
The finance minister’s warnings about the tokenization of money come amid a broader global trend where cryptocurrencies are gaining traction. The Reserve Bank of India has repeatedly cautioned against the risks associated with virtual currencies. In stark contrast, the U.S. government under former President Donald Trump has advocated for innovation in digital finance, even signing an executive order aimed at establishing leadership in this domain. The order included the formation of a working group tasked with creating a federal regulatory framework for digital assets, such as stablecoins, and exploring the establishment of a national digital asset stockpile.
Sitharaman called into question the lack of oversight surrounding individual countries’ forays into tokenization. She asked, “Who is going to have oversight on these sorts of things?” This speaks to the broader concerns about the implications of currency transformation on global economics and governance. She referenced the historical precedent of moving to currencies without gold backing and queried whether the current trajectory towards tokenization reflects a similar depth of understanding.
In discussing India’s economic ties with China, the minister acknowledged the growing calls for enhanced access and interaction, noting approaches from both sides. She pointed to recent dialogues prompted by External Affairs Minister S. Regarding domestic economic conditions, Sitharaman highlighted improvements in balance sheets of companies and banks, resulting from a reduced corporate tax rate aimed at stimulating investments.
