Government Shuts Down 25 Apps and Websites Over Pornographic Content Allegations
The central government has taken strict action against several mobile applications and websites, including ULLU, for displaying obscene and objectionable content. Following recommendations from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, a total of 25 apps and websites have been banned. Internet service providers in the country have been directed to prevent Indian users from accessing these platforms.
The banned apps include ULLU (ULLU), ALTT, Big Shots App, Desiflix, BoomX, Nabarsa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalba App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Fenio, ShowX, Soul Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugee, Mozflix, and Triflics.
According to official sources, these apps and websites have disseminated various forms of pornographic advertisements and content, which have been deemed to violate the Information Technology Act and other applicable laws. Specifically, they are accused of infringing upon Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act of 2000, Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code of 2023, and Section 4 of the Obscene Representation of Women (Prevention) Act of 1986.
The government has indicated that under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, if any intermediary fails to remove illegal content promptly upon receiving government notification, they will not be exempt from liability but will be deemed to have assisted and collaborated in the offense.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated that the ban on such apps and websites is aimed at protecting societal morals and upholding the rule of law. There are indications that future measures may be even stricter.
