Unlocking History: Trump Administration Shares MLK Assassination Files
US President Donald Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, announced that the administration has released over 230,000 pages of documents related to the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. This significant disclosure comes after nearly six decades of lingering questions about the circumstances surrounding King’s assassination.
In a post on social media platform X, Gabbard detailed that the released documents include information on the FBI’s investigation, potential leads, and internal memos outlining the progress of the case. Among the materials is information regarding James Earl Ray’s former cellmate, who claimed he had discussed an assassination plot with Ray, along with other relevant details.
Just three days after taking office on January 23, Trump signed an executive order aimed at declassifying any remaining files related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy, and King. This move has been noted by Xinhua news agency.
The records, which had been sealed since a court order in 1977, were originally gathered by the FBI and comprised over 240,000 pages. These records were stored away from public scrutiny in the National Archives and Records Administration.
King’s family, including his two surviving children, Martin III and Bernice, were briefed by the Trump administration regarding the decision to release these files. Their teams are currently reviewing the documents, although several family members have expressed opposition to the release.
Martin Luther King Jr. is widely recognized as one of the foremost figures in the American civil rights movement. He is celebrated for advocating nonviolent resistance against racial segregation and inequality, most famously encapsulated in his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
