Skyrocketing Journeys: China’s Record-Breaking Air Travel Boom in 2024
China is poised to achieve a record-breaking year for passenger air travel in 2024, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Passenger flights are anticipated to reach 700 million this year, surpassing pre-pandemic figures. Song Zhiyong, head of the CAAC, revealed this projection at the Asia-Pacific Summit for Aviation Safety.
The resurgence of China’s air travel sector is evident, with a nine percent increase in passenger trips during the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2019, as reported by the State Council. This bounce-back suggests a strong recovery from the pandemic-induced slump in the aviation industry.
In 2023, China recorded 619.6 million air passenger trips, hinting at a continued upward trend leading into 2024. The Lunar New Year holidays earlier this year saw tourism revenues surge by 47.4% year-on-year, bolstered by a domestic travel boom that exceeded pre-pandemic levels.
Furthermore, international travel has been invigorated by events like the Paris Olympic Games, with significant demand for flights to and from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Europe, according to a CAAC official. The broader Asia-Pacific region’s travel sector has also benefited this year from an influx of Chinese tourists.
These developments collectively underscore China’s robust recovery in air travel, positioning the country for a record year in 2024 amidst a thriving domestic and international aviation landscape.
