Assam Police Capture 22 Ulfa-I, NSCN-KYA Cadres in Major July Operation

In a significant operation against insurgent activities, the Assam Police have apprehended 22 members of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (Ulfa-I) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang Yung Aung (NSCN-KYA) across various districts of Assam in July, according to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Satya Raj Hazarika on Monday. During a media briefing in Charaideo, Hazarika indicated that nine affiliates of the two militant organizations were also arrested in Charaideo district in June. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to combat subversive activities in anticipation of Independence Day celebrations.

Hazarika stated, “We have arrested 22 cadres of the Ulfa-I and NSCN-KYA from different districts this month. Last month, nine linkmen associated with these groups were detained in Charaideo district.” He explained that these operations were intensified based on intelligence regarding possible threats from militant factions, particularly in Upper Assam’s border areas with Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Security forces, comprising the Assam Police, Assam Rifles, and the Army under a Unified Command, are on high alert to ensure the peaceful observance of Independence Day.

The IGP emphasized that these arrests resulted from thorough intelligence gathering and prompt actions by security personnel. “These arrests have notably disrupted the operational capabilities of these groups in the region,” he added. The ongoing crackdown forms part of a broader security operation that started in June with the capture of nine linkmen, who often act as vital intermediaries between militant groups and local communities, aiding in recruitment, logistics, and intelligence for underground activities.

Charaideo’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Surjeet Singh Panesar, present at the briefing, reaffirmed that the crackdown would persist. “We are closely monitoring suspicious movements, particularly in border regions. Our goal is to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents,” Panesar remarked. The heightened security measures come as reports indicate militant groups are attempting to escalate violence leading up to August 15. In response, security forces have increased patrolling, established checkpoints, and conducted raids in sensitive areas. As Independence Day approaches, Assam Police and collaborative forces remain vigilant, committed to thwarting any plans by insurgents to disrupt peace in the region.
