Electrifying Thrills in Monaco: Experience the Excitement of E1’s All-Electric Boat Racing Competition
Monaco’s ties to car racing and boating are evident from its iconic Formula One circuit and the luxurious superyachts at Port Hercule. However, the principality is keen to rebrand itself as a sustainable destination. The “Green is the New Glam” campaign launched in 2018, and a 2023 tourism initiative spotlighted sustainability alongside Instagram appeal and digital nomad interest. Despite the contradiction posed by its high-carbon Formula One races and superyachts, Monaco is making strides with the E1 boating competition, showcasing 100% electric-powered speedboats.
E1 races, which began in Saudi Arabia in February 2023, are a step towards this green ambition. Bernard d’Alessandri of Yacht Club de Monaco praised E1 for proving electric boat racing is feasible. The Racebird, E1’s electric speedboat, is eco-friendly, producing zero emissions, half the noise, and fewer waves than traditional boats, thus protecting marine life. Innovations like robotic, anchorless buoys also prevent seabed damage.
The Racebird’s designer, Sophi Horne, initially faced skepticism but has since garnered interest from Monaco’s elite. High-profile team owners like Will Smith, Rafael Nadal, and Tom Brady amplify the event’s appeal. The series mandates both owners and teams to engage in marine conservation, with initiatives like Team Nadal’s seagrass preservation effort making a significant impact. Celebrity involvement, emphasized by figures like Tom Brady, enhances public engagement in ocean conservation and sustainable practices.
The final two races in the E1 Series are slated for Lake Como on August 23 and Hong Kong on November 10, continuing to merge high technology, celebrity influence, and environmental responsibility.
