Kolkata Port Trust, also known as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, has entered into a significant partnership with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. to revitalize the historic Kumartuli ghat, a site steeped in cultural importance along the Hooghly River. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on July 11, 2025, marking the start of a project aimed at the redevelopment, restoration, and beautification of this iconic location.

Rathendra Raman, Chairman of Kolkata Port Trust, emphasized the ghat’s cultural significance, stating, “Kumartuli Ghat is not just a site-it is a living legacy of Bengal’s artistic soul. Through this partnership with Adani Ports, we are not only restoring a physical structure but also reviving a space deeply woven into Kolkata’s cultural fabric.” The initiative aligns with the port’s ongoing Swachhata drive, which aims to enhance one of the oldest and most beloved ghats in the city.

Kumartuli ghat is known as the residence of the artisans who craft Durga idols, preserving a tradition that has thrived for generations. Subrat Tripathy, President of Business Development at Adani Ports, expressed pride in the project, saying, “Taking responsibility to renovate a heritage ghat like Kumartuli, which is sentimentally connected to Kolkata, is definitely an honor for APSEZ Ltd.”

The restoration will focus on preserving the ghat’s heritage architecture while enhancing its cleanliness and safety. These improvements aim to attract both local residents and tourists to the city’s distinctive waterfronts. Alongside Kumartuli, plans are underway to restore four additional ghats in the region: Chotelal ghat, Mayer ghat, Telkal ghat, and Nimtala Immersion ghat.
