Exciting Leap Forward: CM Triumphantly Inaugurates Thriving Oyster Mushroom Cluster in Mendipathar
Tura, Aug 13: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Oyster Mushroom Cluster (Common Facility Center) under the SFURTI scheme (MSME) with additional funding from the Government of Meghalaya at Jampara, Mendipathar, North Garo Hills on Tuesday. This pioneering facility, equipped with solar-powered machinery, is one of the first mushroom processing units in the North East region.
The Rs 10-crore project, implemented by Mendipathar Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Ltd. with technical support from Madhukar Livelihood Foundation and the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship, Guwahati, aims to enhance the livelihoods of 634 registered farmers by promoting oyster mushroom production and value addition.
Chief Minister Sangma highlighted that the facility will address the rising demand for mushrooms in the state and create job opportunities for the youth, initially benefiting 1,000 farmers. He urged stakeholders to collaborate for the project’s success.
Vineeth Madhukar, President of Madhukar Livelihood Foundation, expressed joy at the inauguration, emphasizing the dedicated efforts since the project’s conceptualization in 2019. He noted the integrated support system designed for farmers, including access to technology, funds, human resources, and market avenues.
Sister Rose Kayathinkara, President and Secretary of Mendipathar Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, praised the project’s departments and shared that many farmers have received training and support for better cultivation practices through the initiative. The facility will produce marketable mushroom products like dehydrated mushrooms, powder, pickles, soup mixes, and chutney mixes.
During the event, Chief Minister Sangma felicitated the three best mushroom producers in the district and flagged off vehicles for rubber latex collection. Other key speakers included Mendipathar MLA Marthon J Sangma and NGH’s Deputy Commissioner AK Singhs.
