Mizoram’s Crackdown: 11 Arrested in Major Rs 1.44 Cr Contraband Bust

The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with other security forces, successfully conducted multiple operations in Mizoram over the past 24 hours, resulting in the seizure of contraband valued at over Rs 1.44 crore and the arrest of 11 individuals. In the first significant operation, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police initiated an Area Domination Patrol (ADP) in the Tlangpuikawn area of Siaha District, following specific intelligence on the movement of foreign cigars. During this operation, security personnel intercepted four vehicles and recovered 83 cartons of foreign cigars (Burmese Cheroot) worth Rs 62.25 lakh, leading to the arrests of four individuals aged between 20 and 27.

In another incident, officials from the Assam Rifles, along with the Excise and Narcotics Department, set up a check post on the New Dawn to Hnahthial road, also in Siaha District. Here, they apprehended four suspects and, after a careful search, seized 109.08 grams of heroin, with an estimated market value of Rs 81.81 lakh. The arrested included two women involved in drug trafficking.

In a third operation, the Assam Rifles joined forces with state police in the Chawngte area of Lunglei District, where they arrested three individuals and confiscated 373 packets containing approximately 124 liters of locally made alcohol worth Rs 93,250. All 11 individuals arrested, along with the seized drugs and other contraband, have been forwarded to the police for legal proceedings.

Security officials suspect that these drugs and contraband were smuggled from Myanmar. They underline that the Siaha District has an unfenced border with Myanmar, while Lunglei District shares a border with Bangladesh. Myanmar’s Chin state is well-known as a hub for smuggling various drugs and contraband, which frequently enters India through six districts of Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip. Mizoram itself shares a 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh.
