Experience the Majestic Beauty: Mughal-Era Sheesh Mahal Reopens in Delhi, Reviving Timeless Splendor!

In a significant cultural revival, Sheesh Mahal, a Mughal-era palace located in Shalimar Bagh, North Delhi, has been officially restored and unveiled. The event took place on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, with Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat leading the inauguration. Built in 1653 during Emperor Shah Jahan’s reign, Sheesh Mahal along with its lush gardens had faced years of neglect, remaining in a state of disrepair until now.

The restoration efforts gained momentum after Lieutenant Governor Vinai Saxena’s visit in January 2024, which catalyzed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to undertake the extensive restoration of the palace’s historic features. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) played a crucial role as well, reconstructing the Mughal-style Char Bagh landscape to revive the site’s former splendor.

Shalimar Bagh, originally named Aizzabad Garden, is steeped in history and was reportedly commissioned by Shah Jahan in honor of Aizzun-Nisha Begum. The term “Shalimar,” translating to “abode of pleasure,” is believed to have been coined by the emperor himself. This palace is not just an architectural marvel; it also holds historical weight as the location of Aurangzeb’s first coronation in 1658, adding layers to its significance.

As part of the larger restoration project, the DDA also revitalized a dilapidated baradari (pavilion) and three heritage cottages, employing traditional materials like lime surkhi, lakhauri bricks, and organic binders such as gud, belgiri, and urad dal. Notably, two of these cottages have been transformed into functional spaces: one is now home to The Readers Café Corner, a literary café, while the other operates as Café Shalimar, catering to park visitors.

During the inauguration, Lieutenant Governor Saxena emphasized the community’s role in preserving these historic sites. He remarked, “Let us ensure these priceless monuments remain clean, green, and protected from encroachment.” This call to action aims to foster a sense of collective responsibility among the public towards safeguarding Delhi’s cultural heritage.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also spoke at the event, commending the restoration initiatives aimed at reviving Delhi’s historical legacy. In a pointed remark aimed at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, she stated, “Mr. Kejriwal built a ‘Sheesh Mahal’ for personal luxury using taxpayer money. We’re restoring one for the public good. That’s the difference.” This commentary highlights the contrasting approaches to leadership and the management of public resources, resonating with many citizens.

The restoration of Sheesh Mahal and other heritage structures not only enhances New Delhi’s cultural landscape but also reaffirms the importance of preserving history for future generations. With these efforts, Shalimar Bagh stands as a testament to the rich Mughal heritage, inviting all to experience its beauty and historical significance.
