Keshav Maharaj Makes History as First South African Spinner to Shine
South African cricketer Keshav Maharaj made history during the ongoing Test series against Zimbabwe by becoming the first spinner from his country to claim 200 Test wickets. The milestone was achieved on Sunday, the second day of the first match of the two-match series. Maharaj brought this remarkable achievement to fruition by dismissing Zimbabwe’s Craig Ervine, who was stumped by Kyle Verreyne in the 34th over.
At 35 years old, Maharaj has spent nine years playing Test cricket and has emerged as the team’s leading spinner. With this accomplishment, he has eclipsed the previous record set by former off-spinner Hugh Tayfield, who took 170 wickets. Maharaj now boasts a total of 202 wickets from 59 Test matches, featuring 11 five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul. In his first-class cricket career, he has garnered an impressive 631 wickets across 166 matches.
In the match, South Africa declared their first innings at 418 runs for nine wickets. In response, Zimbabwe was bowled out for 251 runs, with Maharaj contributing significantly by taking three wickets for 70 runs over 16.4 overs. His teammate Wiaan Mulder also performed commendably, claiming four wickets for just 50 runs in 16 overs.
