Zimbabwe Faces Major Setback as Star Player Withdraws from Test Series
Zimbabwe’s cricket team has suffered a significant setback in the ongoing Test series against South Africa, losing star opener Brian Bennett to a concussion. In a match taking place in Bulawayo, Bennett was unable to continue after sustaining the injury during the second day’s play. His place will be taken by Prince Masvaure, who last played a Test match in July 2024 against Ireland.
The incident occurred after South Africa declared their innings at 418 runs for 9 wickets. Zimbabwe’s innings began poorly when Bennett’s opening partner, Takudzawanashe Kaitano, was dismissed without scoring in the fifth over. In the sixth over, Bennett attempted to pull a delivery from Kwena Mphaka, which struck his helmet after glancing off the bat’s edge. Although Bennett initially seemed fine following a concussion test from the physio, he later left the field, rendering him unavailable for the remaining days of the match.
Bennett’s unexpected exit is particularly disheartening for Zimbabwe, as the 21-year-old had recently delivered an impressive performance during the England tour, scoring 139 runs in his last Test. In his previous matches, he has consistently scored over 50 runs, including a century. Masvaure, his replacement, had a notable 50 in his last outing.
As for the match itself, Zimbabwe managed to post a score of 238 runs for 7 wickets in 60 overs, with Sean Williams remaining unbeaten after scoring a century. However, the team still trailed South Africa by 180 runs.
