Shocking Kolkata Gang Rape Case: Medical Exam Confirms Brutal Assault and Forceful Penetration
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with a gang rape incident involving a first-year law student at South Calcutta Law College. The accused, which includes an alumnus and two senior students, were produced at a city court after their arrest on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The police have also sealed off the location where the alleged crime occurred, enhancing their investigation into this distressing incident.
According to a senior Kolkata Police official, the victim’s medical examination corroborated her claims, revealing evidence of forceful penetration, along with bite marks and nail scratches on her body. The officer noted that marks of physical assault were present on her neck as well. The alleged attack took place on the evening of June 25, after the victim had gone to the college to fill out a form for an exam. Once her task was completed, she alleged that she was coerced into staying in the college union room.
During the ordeal, the primary accused, a former student and practicing criminal lawyer, allegedly assaulted her while the other two stood guard outside the room. “The evidence corroborates what the victim detailed in her complaint to the Kasba Police Station,” the officer stated. According to Chief Police Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal, principles from a Supreme Court ruling specify that all individuals involved in a gang rape must be held accountable, regardless of whether they directly participated in the act.
The victim’s written complaint revealed that she had been proposed to by one of the accused, but she declined, citing an existing relationship. The attack reportedly lasted from approximately 7:30 PM to 10:50 PM, during which the victim experienced difficulty breathing and pleaded for medical help. Despite her requests, she was subjected to continued abuse and was later forced to ask for an inhaler, which the accused obtained from a nearby store.
Disturbingly, the victim alleged that the two senior students recorded the assault on their mobile phones, threatening her with the release of the footage on social media should she decide to report the incident to the authorities. The former student, described as influential within the college, had also made her the secretary of a women’s organization, further complicating the power dynamics at play in this case.
The incident at South Calcutta Law College has reignited public discourse on issues of campus safety and the protection of students, reminiscent of previous tragic cases, including the rape and murder of an intern at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August of the previous year. As authorities continue their investigation, the incident raises significant concerns about the safety of women in educational institutions and the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure their protection.
As the case progresses through the legal system, it remains critical for the community to remain vigilant against such acts of violence and to advocate for stronger measures to safeguard individuals in these environments. The Kolkata Police continue to investigate all aspects of the case, and further updates are anticipated as the judicial process unfolds.
