Majuli, a riverine district in Assam, celebrated a significant moment on Friday with its inaugural export of red rice, known locally as ‘bao dhan,’ to international markets in Dubai and Russia. This shipment, which weighs 267 metric tonnes, marks a pivotal advance for Assam’s agricultural sector, emphasizing sustainable farming practices. The flag-off ceremony was led by Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam, alongside District Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak, Senior Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das, and other notable officials from the agriculture sector. The red rice will be exported by IVC Agrovet Pvt Ltd, signifying the potential for regular export trade from the region.

During the ceremony, MLA Bhuban Gam highlighted the historic nature of this export, stating, “The export of organically produced red rice from Majuli to Central Asia and Europe is not just significant for local farmers’ livelihoods but also elevates Assam’s indigenous crops in the international market.” This specific variety of red rice is celebrated for its rich aroma, outstanding nutritional properties, and organic growing methods, making it a notable export product.

The health benefits of red rice enhance its appeal to global consumers, as it is a rich source of iron, protein, vitamins, and fiber. Its vibrant color, originating from a high level of anthocyanins, lends distinctive nutritional advantages, including better digestion and potential support for anemia, asthma treatment, and bone health. Experts point out that the increasing global trend towards healthy and functional foods aligns perfectly with the export of red rice.

The timing of this export is fortuitous, reflecting a growing international appetite for organic and native food varieties. Versatile in nature, red rice can be used in both sweet and savory dishes, maintaining its status as a staple in Assamese cuisine for generations while also holding cultural significance.

District Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak emphasized the broader implications of this first shipment, stating, “The export of 267 metric tons of bao rice-a traditional aromatic variety cultivated through entirely organic methods-demonstrates Majuli’s capacity for sustainable farming and global trade. Our farmers have upheld these organic traditions for centuries, and now the world is taking notice. This is just the beginning as we aim to reach more countries in the near future.”
