The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has called for urgent reforms within the state’s sports ecosystem, highlighting critical shortcomings in administration, infrastructure, and transparency. In a strongly worded memorandum to the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, AAPSU set a 10-day ultimatum for the government to respond, warning that failure to act could lead to democratic protests.
The memorandum, signed by the AAPSU Games & Sports Secretary, details ongoing challenges affecting sports development throughout Arunachal Pradesh. The Union emphasized that despite the enthusiasm and potential of the youth, the current sports framework is deteriorating due to inadequate management and a shortage of qualified personnel.
One significant issue raised is the lack of regular District Sports Officers (DSOs) in numerous districts. AAPSU pointed out that many positions are either unfilled or occupied by temporary officials, which negatively affects sports administration and grassroots development. They are demanding the immediate recruitment of full-time DSOs through the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) to ensure accountability and merit-based hiring.
The Sange Laden Sports Academy in Chimpu has also faced severe criticism from AAPSU, which described it as suffering from mismanagement and lack of utilization. The academy currently has numerous disciplines without regular coaches, which hinders athlete training and growth. Moreover, hostel facilities lack full-time wardens, posing risks to the safety of student-athletes. The Union condemned the policy that limits admission to just two students per district, arguing for an increase to at least five students to enhance participation.
Additionally, AAPSU has voiced concerns over financial transparency, urging the government to publish a detailed report on the funds allocated to the academy, including their use for infrastructure, coaching salaries, and equipment purchases. They also called for the expedited establishment of the long-awaited Sange Laden Sports Academy at Miao in Changlang district, stressing that delays are robbing youth in the Tirap, Changlang, and Longding regions of vital sports opportunities.
On a broader governance note, AAPSU highlighted widespread dissatisfaction regarding the handling of sports funds and the failure to meet commitments made at the state level. They insist that the government must act swiftly and genuinely commit to empowering youth.
Should the state government fail to respond within the stipulated 10 days, AAPSU warned it would pursue constitutionally protected methods of protest, placing full accountability on the government for any fallout from such actions.
The strong stance taken by AAPSU has garnered attention from sports enthusiasts, civil society organizations, and young athletes across Arunachal Pradesh, all of whom have long been advocating for better sports infrastructure and increased transparency in governance.
