Landslide Halts Train Services in Tripura: Urgent Travel Advisory Issued
Train services along the Lumding–Badarpur hill section of Assam have been suspended immediately due to a landslide at the New Haflong–Jatinga Lampur area, disrupting rail connectivity to Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and the Barak Valley. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) reported that large boulders, mud, and water flowing from the hills accumulated on the tracks, creating a significant safety risk for train operations. The landslide occurred during road repair work, which destabilized the slope between the roadway and railway track.
Officials have identified inadequate slope protection measures as a contributing factor to the incident, which has halted this vital rail link that connects several northeastern states with the rest of India. In response to this crisis, the NFR has formally requested the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to deploy personnel and machinery urgently to stabilize the slope and secure the affected area. Efforts are already underway to clear debris from the railway tracks; however, train services will remain suspended until safety can be fully assured.
As a consequence of the landslide, multiple trains have been cancelled. Trains scheduled for cancellation include the Guwahati–Silchar, Rangiya–Silchar, Guwahati–Dullavcherra Express, and Silchar–Rangiya Express on June 23, along with the Dullavcherra–Guwahati and Naharlagun–Silchar Special Express on June 24. In addition, several services have been short-terminated, including the Silchar–Naharlagun Special at New Harangajao, the Agartala–Anand Vihar Tejas Express at Badarpur, and the Sealdah–Silchar Kanchanjungha Express at Lumding.
Earlier in the week, on June 21 and 22, the Charalpalli–Silchar Express, Kolkata–Agartala Garib Rath Express, and Lokmanya Tilak–Agartala Express were all curtailed up to Guwahati. Moreover, the departure time of the Silchar–New Delhi Poorvottar Sampark Kranti Express has been postponed from June 23 to 6:00 AM on June 24.
Authorities from the NFR are closely monitoring the situation and have indicated that normal train services will resume only after they can guarantee complete safety. Passengers are advised to verify the status of their trains before making travel plans in this region.
