Assam Police Heroically Halt Illegal Entry Amid Bangladesh Unrest: Guwahati News
Four Bangladeshi Nationals Thwarted in Illegal Entry Attempt at Karimganj Border
NEW DELHI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday the successful prevention of an illegal entry attempt by four Bangladeshi nationals at the Karimganj sector of the India-Bangladesh border. Identified as Motiur Seikh, Mushiar Mullah, Tania Mullah, and Rita Mullah, the individuals tried to cross into India early on Monday morning. Prompt intervention by security forces at 1:30 am repelled the unauthorized entry at the zero point, ensuring the integrity of the border.
Expressing concerns over the situation in Bangladesh, the Chief Minister noted that the unrest could lead to increased attempts to cross into the Northeast region of India. He assured that the state government maintains stringent border security, with nobody allowed entry without valid passports and visas.
Director General of Assam Police, GP Singh, confirmed a high alert along the Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent illegal crossings. The border, which extends 110 kilometers and includes a 4-kilometer unfenced river stretch, is primarily secured by the Border Security Force (BSF) as the first line of defense, with Assam Police as the second.
Due to the current unrest in Bangladesh, the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi, Karimganj, facilitating trade with Bangladesh, has been closed and all trade activities suspended. District Commissioner Mridul Yadav clarified that only Indian passport holders can cross into India through this checkpoint. Consequently, at least 60 students have returned to India via the Sutarkandi point recently.
Additionally, a separate incident on Saturday saw seven individuals breaching the International Border near Bhogdanga village in Dhubri district. BSF personnel successfully managed to persuade them to return to Bangladesh.
As security measures tighten, Assam’s vigilance continues, particularly in strategically challenging areas like the "chicken neck" region where Bhogdanga and Faushkarkuti villages are encircled by Bangladesh on three sides.
