Exciting Triumphs: Wankyrmen and Filinza Shine at Shillong 10K Run
Wankyrmen L Mawphlang and Filinza Hansepi emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s open categories, respectively, at the 6th Shillong 10K Run held on June 21. This annual event, organized by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, coincided with International Olympic Day, celebrated worldwide around June 23 to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee.
In the men’s race, Wankyrmen finished ahead of competitors Rangki Jonathan Pathaw and Rishanmehi Ryngkhlem. Filinza dominated the women’s category, followed by Angelista Syiemlieh and Inocensia Tympuin.
In the 50-plus veteran divisions, Arvind Basaiawmoit claimed the men’s title, with Lawrence Pariong and Dr. Mario Danny Hek securing second and third places, respectively. Mena Mary Wahlang took the championship in the women’s veteran race, finishing ahead of Julina Wanniang and Smarless Marwein.
Notable local runner Kmoin Wahlang, who did not compete this year, served as the chief guest, flagging off the race and presenting prizes. During her speech, she encouraged participants to remain dedicated and to bring recognition to Meghalaya.
The race commenced and concluded at the Polo Ground, traversing significant city landmarks such as Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah, Dhankheti, Barik, the State Central Library, and the Meghalaya Secretariat.
Cash prizes amounting to Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000, and Rs 2,000 were awarded to the top three finishers in each category. Senior officials from the Meghalaya State Olympic Association and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs were present to witness the event.
