Unleashing Victory: Why Marquez is the Ultimate Choice for India’s National Football Coach
New Delhi, Aug 11: Manolo Marquez, who recently became the head coach of India’s national men’s football team, described the opportunity as a “dream come true” but emphasized the future importance of having an Indian coach. Appointed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the 55-year-old Spaniard will juggle his role at FC Goa during the 2024-25 season before transitioning exclusively to the national team in 2025.
Having spent significant years in India since 2020, Marquez highlighted his goal to uplift Indian football at both individual and team levels. He stressed that the national team coach should eventually be Indian due to a better understanding of the country’s diverse dynamics.
His immediate responsibilities include managing the Indian squad at the Intercontinental Cup in Hyderabad from September 3-9, featuring Syria and Mauritius, followed by the VFF Tri-Nation Series in Vietnam from October 9-15, which includes hosts Vietnam and Lebanon.
Addressing potential conflicts arising from his dual roles, Marquez pointed out the precedence of similar situations globally, assuring dedicated efforts for the national team. His long-term objective is to improve Indian football and secure qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup, with the next qualifying rounds starting in March.
Marquez advocates for Indian players to gain experience abroad, even in lower divisions, to enhance their skills against higher-level competition. Despite acknowledging significant improvement in Indian football over the past five years, he stressed the need for a stronger mentality among players. He also remains open to incorporating competent I-League players into the national squad.
In concluding remarks, Marquez expressed optimism about the progressive development of Indian football, step by step, towards achieving notable success. (PTI)
