Leonard Lee Buschel, a prominent figure in Hollywood’s drug scene, revealed that marijuana has been a constant presence in his life since his teenage years. In an interview with DailyMail, Buschel shared that his initial experience with marijuana transformed his perception of life, saying it felt like “suddenly my life went from black and white to colour.” He described finding a lifelong companion in marijuana, viewing it as “a tool for living, the key to the magic kingdom.”
Buschel’s journey as a drug dealer, although not grand in scale, was marked by a certain success. He noted, “I wasn’t a big dealer, but I was the most successful one because I never got caught.” Earning about $100,000 a year-equivalent to approximately $300,000 today-Buschel managed to provide a comfortable life for his family while benefiting from tax-free earnings. His work placed him in the orbit of many stars and cultural icons of the 1970s and 1980s, including John Belushi, Richard Pryor, and Robert Downey Sr.
Having dropped out of college, Buschel took to smuggling Lebanese hashish and worked across cities like Philadelphia, New York, Florida, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. He sold drugs to smaller dealers who supplied them to high-profile figures, including Belushi, who tragically died of a substance overdose, and Pryor, known for his tumultuous battles with addiction.
Buschel also had connections with literary legends such as Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs and even shared a long-lasting friendship with filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., who, despite his own struggles, introduced his son, Robert Downey Jr., to marijuana at a young age. Downey Jr. would later battle his own addictions before achieving sobriety in 2003.
Reflecting on the darker sides of his past, Buschel recounted near-death experiences tied to drug use. He described a harrowing incident involving cocaine that resulted in severe bleeding and another that led to a catastrophic asthma attack, leaving him momentarily blind due to his eyes being taped shut during recovery. Despite these brushes with death, he didn’t immediately seek help; it took a series of events-including a relapse of vodka shots and ecstasy-before he committed to rehab. Remarkably, he has remained sober for almost 30 years after using marijuana daily for 26 years and cocaine for 13.
In a candid message to those still reliant on marijuana, Buschel urged them to “grow up,” pointing out that many long-time users are not seeking a high but are instead trapped in a habit. He encouraged people, especially those in middle age, to reassess their relationship with the substance, stating that it’s essential to move on from dependency.
Buschel’s story not only highlights the complexities of addiction but also offers a glimpse into the lives intertwined with Hollywood’s vibrant yet perilous culture of the past.
