Modi Government’s Pledge: Last-Mile Commitment to Northeast Development
Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming the Northeast into a vital growth engine during his outreach visit to Wokha district in Nagaland on June 16. This visit aimed to strengthen connections with tribal leaders, civil society organizations, and local administrators as part of the government’s broader strategy for inclusive development, cultural integration, and improved connectivity in the region.
“Prime Minister Modi has specifically focused on the Northeast, viewing it not as a periphery but as a growth engine. Each visit is an opportunity to listen, understand, and respond to local aspirations,” Singh remarked while engaging with tribal representatives.
The Union Minister clarified that the government’s involvement in the Northeast goes beyond mere symbolism, indicating a structural and substantive approach guided by long-term policies, infrastructure projects, and initiatives supporting livelihoods. He highlighted a decade of advancements under Modi’s leadership, noting significant enhancements in central assistance, especially in infrastructure and connectivity, as well as scientific initiatives aimed at promoting rural sustainability.
During a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Singh discussed local development challenges and ongoing central schemes with officials and civil society members. Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar provided updates on the district’s current situation and future prospects. Representatives from key tribal organizations, including the Lotha Hoho and the Lotha Students’ Union, actively participated, offering valuable insights and suggestions to improve government programs.
In a significant move, Singh launched a vision document titled “Income Generation from Banana Cultivation,” which aims to enhance livelihood opportunities through banana farming. The initiative is designed to offer technical support, market connections, and institutional assistance to farmers in the area.
The Ministry of Personnel affirmed that the Centre is committed to maintaining regionally-focused engagement, promoting cooperative federalism, and ensuring that welfare schemes effectively reach tribal and remote communities.
