Many residents are lured by the prospect of quick financial gain, leading to significant monetary losses and family turmoil.
The addiction to Double Guti has devastated households, with individuals using money meant for essential expenses only to experience financial ruin and increased domestic conflict. This has created a cycle of anxiety and instability, particularly among families struggling to help their loved ones break free from this addictive habit.
Young, educated individuals in the Margherita region are not exempt from this issue. Many were attracted to the game in hopes of achieving rapid success, only to find themselves entrapped in severe financial difficulties. The growing trend of gambling addiction highlights the vulnerabilities within the community, particularly among those seeking economic opportunities.
Pranjal Baraik, Joint Publicity Secretary of the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA), voiced concerns about the situation, stating, “it is very unfortunate that locally called Double Guti, a popular gambling game, has ruined many youths in the Margherita Co-District area, where tea garden workers fall prey to this game and lose their hard-earned money.” His comments reflect the alarming impact on local youth and workers.
The ATTSA has called on local authorities, including the Margherita Police and district officials, to take decisive action against illegal Double Guti gambling operations. The association has warned of potential protests if effective measures are not implemented promptly, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Despite awareness of the problem, enforcement remains a challenge. Local leadership and law enforcement are pressed to intensify efforts to mitigate the damaging effects of this gambling epidemic. The Margherita community stands at a critical juncture, necessitating immediate action to address the ongoing financial and social fallout.
