Tragedy Strikes: Boeing Dreamliner Crash and Military Escalations Cast a Shadow Over Paris Air Show
Vietnam Airlines’ Boeing 787-9 captivated audiences at the 51st Paris International Airshow in Le Bourget, France, showcasing the aviation giant’s latest innovations. However, the mood shifted dramatically with the news of Air India Flight 171’s tragic crash, which resulted in multiple fatalities, marking a somber milestone as the first deadly incident involving a Boeing Dreamliner.
Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who took the reins in August, had planned a positive debut at the airshow. Under his guidance, the company has seen increased production of its popular 737 Max jets and boosted deliveries, indicating a recovery from past manufacturing and safety challenges. With shares up over 13% this year and outperforming the S&P 500, expectations were high. However, following the disaster in India, Ortberg decided to forgo attending the show to focus on supporting his team and addressing the situation.
The crash involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, on a particularly hot day. With demand for aircraft remaining strong and wait times extending into the next decade for popular models, the industry outlook appears resilient. Boeing projects a need for 43,600 new commercial airplanes over the next 20 years, with emerging markets expected to drive much of this growth.
Pricing trends show a rising cost for new planes, with an Airbus A321neo recently listed at $65 million, a marked increase from earlier this year. Leasing costs are also on the rise due to a shortage of aircraft, pushing airlines to reconsider their purchasing strategies. Notably, a 12-year-old Boeing 737’s monthly rent has jumped nearly 42% to $241,000.
Experts predict that the Paris Airshow could yield between 700 and 800 aircraft orders, with potential buyers including Ethiopian Airlines, AirAsia, and Vietnam Airlines. While the recent tragedy involving Air India may dampen immediate enthusiasm for new orders, analysts like Richard Aboulafia believe that long-term demand for twin-aisle aircraft will remain unaffected. He noted, “It’s a terrible tragedy… but it doesn’t seem linked to the design or build of the airplane.”
