Urgent Efforts by ONGC to Control Gas Leak in Sivasagar Unfolding Now
Efforts are currently underway to manage a continuous gas leak from the RDS#147A well near Bhotiapar in the Rudrasagar field, situated in the Sivasagar district of Assam. ONGC’s Crisis Management team is on-site, organizing the necessary equipment to contain the situation. According to an ONGC press statement, the required fluids for the containment operation are ready, and the next phase is anticipated to commence at daybreak tomorrow. Access to the location is strictly limited to essential operational personnel due to the ongoing gas leak.
On June 12, a significant explosion at the 147 No. rig in the Rudrasagar oil field triggered widespread panic among residents in the vicinity. Following the explosion, natural gas erupted violently, compelling residents from nearby villages to evacuate for their safety. The sound of the gas emissions was reported to be audible from distances of 3 to 4 kilometers away.
Emergency response teams have reached the site, but the situation remains critical as gas continues to leak uncontrollably. Frightened locals are urgently requesting immediate containment measures and enhanced safety protocols from ONGC and local authorities. In a precautionary move, the Sivasagar district administration has evacuated approximately 70 families to a relief camp following the incident.
