Vinesh Phogat’s Appeal for Joint Silver Medal Decision Deferred to August 13
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has postponed its ruling on wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint silver medal at the Paris Olympics until August 13. The deadline for submitting additional documents has been extended to August 11. Vinesh was disqualified from the women’s freestyle 50kg event after being 100 grams over the weight limit on the day of her gold medal match. As a result, she was stripped of her guaranteed silver medal and announced her retirement.
Her legal team, including high-profile advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, remain hopeful for a favorable verdict. Singhania told CNN News18 that the verdict is expected on August 13, praising Vinesh’s performance despite not commenting on their legal strategy.
Vinesh had a stellar run to the final, defeating reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki, former European champion Oksana Livach, and Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman. Following Vinesh’s disqualification, Guzman qualified for the final but lost to Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach expressed understanding but questioned the implications of bending rules for such minor discrepancies. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) also remains hopeful for a positive resolution and continues to support Vinesh in her appeal.
