Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh attended the recent milestone achievement by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which successfully completed tunnelling at the Tughlakabad Railway Colony station for the upcoming Golden Line, part of the Phase IV metro expansion. This development signifies a significant step toward enhancing connectivity in the region. The newly constructed tunnel will link Maa Anandmayee Marg, near Kalkaji Temple, with Tughlakabad station, marking the terminal point on the Golden Line.

The tunnelling breakthrough, measuring 792 meters, was completed with the help of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) and was witnessed by DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar and other officials. TBMs are engineered to navigate different soil and rock strata while minimizing surface disruption, making them particularly effective in urban environments. A DMRC spokesperson shared that the breakthrough for a parallel tunnel across the same stretch is expected to be achieved by July.

Spanning a total of 23.62 kilometers, the Golden Line consists of 19 kilometers of underground operations and 4.5 kilometers elevated. The DMRC projects that the line will be operational by mid-2026 and will include four interchange facilities: linking the Magenta Line at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s T-1, the Airport Express Line at Aerocity, the Yellow Line at Chhatarpur, and the Violet Line at Tughlakabad. In total, the Golden Line will feature 15 stations, with 11 being underground and four elevated.

In his remarks, Minister Singh emphasized the importance of this breakthrough in reaffirming the Centre’s dedication to developing modern, sustainable urban infrastructure. He remarked, “Ever since our [Bharatiya Janata Party] government came to power in Delhi, we have worked to restore the public’s trust, which is now evident in the progress of long-delayed metro phases. What was once stalled is now moving at full speed.” The completion of the Golden Line is set to significantly improve transport options in south Delhi, directly connecting the area to Indira Gandhi International Airport.

As the DMRC continues to streamline its operations and enhance infrastructure, this recent achievement reflects a broader commitment to reducing road congestion and promoting environmental sustainability. With such advancements, the ongoing metro expansion is expected to play a crucial role in making urban commutes more efficient, thereby enriching the overall quality of life for residents.

This development is a pivotal move towards modernizing Delhi’s rapid transit system, ensuring that the city keeps pace with its growing population and transportation needs. As work progresses on the Golden Line, its eventual completion promises to be a transformative feature of the Delhi metro landscape, benefitting commuters for years to come.
