Himanta Urgently Guides Cachar and Hailakandi DCs in Flood Relief Efforts
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood-affected areas in the Barak Valley on June 6, directing the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of Cachar and Hailakandi to ensure the urgent supply of essential items to those in need. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of senior citizens, children, and lactating mothers.
During his visit, Sarma observed that the Barak River is currently flowing above the embankment in Hailakandi, while a breach has occurred in the embankment of the Longi River. He announced government plans to initiate a project aimed at strengthening the embankments to prevent further flooding.
Sarma engaged with district administrations and relevant departments to review the ongoing flood situation, assuring affected communities that all possible governmental support would be provided to restore normalcy once the floodwaters recede. His day-long itinerary included visits to several flood-affected regions within Hailakandi.
The Chief Minister also checked on relief camps located at Kalinagar and Panch Gram, speaking directly with the camp residents to reassure them of the government’s commitment to alleviating their hardships. He extended his visit to Sribhumi district, where he assessed the challenges faced by flood victims on the ground.
At the relief camps established at Rabindra Sadan Girls College, Government Higher Secondary School, and Bhanga Higher Secondary School, Sarma spent valuable time with flood-affected individuals. In a media briefing later at the Sribhumi DC office, he reiterated that while the Barak River is above embankment levels, no breaches have been reported in Hailakandi. In contrast, the breach in the Longi River requires immediate attention, and corrective measures will commence swiftly.
Sarma also mentioned ongoing progress on the East-West Corridor, part of the National Highways Development Project connecting Silchar. He noted that the remaining five kilometers would require the construction of an elevated corridor, emphasizing the government’s commitment to completing this vital infrastructure project.
