Experience Exquisite Cocktails at The Old House: Kathmandu’s Newest Gem by Renowned Mixologist Yangdup Lama!

In the vibrant heart of Kathmandu’s Durbar Marg, amidst its upscale shops and fine dining establishments, a new culinary gem has emerged: The Old House. Helmed by the acclaimed duo Minakshi Singh and Yangdup Lama-known for their renowned bar Sidecar, which consistently ranks on the World’s 50 Best Bars list-the venture marks the pair’s first international establishment, created in collaboration with local entrepreneur Desal Lama.

For Yangdup, The Old House is steeped in nostalgia; he recalls passing by the original structure as a trainee at Hotel Annapurna back in 1993. The space has undergone a significant transformation over the years, and his vision seeks to revive its historical essence while crafting a modern bar experience. After more than a year of development, The Old House now features a warm atmosphere reminiscent of traditional Newari-style homes. Newari architecture, characterized by intricate wood carvings and pagoda-like structures, inspires the bar’s design, which artistically showcases the cultural heritage of Nepal.

“This architecture breathes life into the bar,” Minakshi explains, emphasizing how the decor reflects the artistry and folklore of the past. Guests are welcomed into a space adorned with classic woodwork and a serene central water feature that enhances the ambiance. With a capacity of 80, the establishment embodies not just a name, but a sentiment. Yangdup shares that in Kathmandu, homes over a century old are affectionately referred to as "old houses," a term that carries significant emotional weight. Despite numerous changes over time, some elements, such as the iconic banyan tree outside, remain anchored in the bar’s legacy.

The Old House’s cocktail menu is a narrative journey through the diverse landscapes of Nepal, with 12 signature cocktails that utilize local ingredients and tell stories through flavors. Each drink, meticulously crafted, aims to evoke particular memories and emotions tied to various regions. One standout creation, "Why? Why?", pays homage to Wai Wai, a beloved brand of instant noodles in Nepal, while the "Syangja ko Suntala" cocktail draws inspiration from the region’s famous oranges. Drinks like "Sindhuli Gadhi" honor a folk song and a historic battle, while "Jau Jau Jau" is a smoky blend that reflects the essence of Nepal’s Terai lowlands.

Accompanying the drinks is a thoughtfully curated food menu that celebrates Kathmandu’s vibrant culinary scene. Featuring specialties like Sekuwa-traditional Nepali-style barbecue-and Momocha, a unique take on dumplings with red meat served with tangy peanut sauce, the offerings are designed to complement the cocktail selection and spark lively conversations among guests.

For Yangdup and Minakshi, The Old House is more than just an addition to their impressive portfolio; it is a tribute to memories and the rich heritage of Kathmandu. By bridging the past with the present, they have created a unique space that tells a meaningful story through every sip and bite. In doing so, they have not only elevated the dining and drinking experience in Kathmandu but have also captured a piece of cultural history that resonates deeply with patrons. The Old House is open every day from 12 PM to 1 AM, inviting locals and tourists alike to celebrate the flavors and stories of Nepal.
