Barpeta District Urges Action Against Plastic Pollution on World Environment Day
On June 5, the District Administration of Barpeta held a series of initiatives to raise environmental awareness in observance of World Environment Day. The event took place at Paanch Ali Chowk, the town square in the district headquarters, where prominent officials gathered to witness a street play aimed at highlighting the dangers of improperly disposing of plastics, particularly in rivers. Notable attendees included District Commissioner (I/C) Diganta Baishya, Additional District Commissioner Moushumi Chetia, Municipal Board Chairman Chabilal Das, and Cultural Officer Bidyut Bikash Das. The street play was organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the Department of Forest and the District Administration.
The performance, titled “Nodir Oxukh,” which translates to “Ailment of the River,” was presented by a local artist troupe. It served as a cautionary tale regarding the perils of plastic pollution in aquatic environments, combined with traditional songs and dances that mourned the environmental damage caused by careless plastic disposal.
District Commissioner Baishya emphasized the urgency of implementing region-wide pro-environment measures, stating, “Pollution levels are rising and the use of plastic remains high. The government has undertaken several steps to promote a healthy environment, and our street play should serve as a reminder that each of us must do our part to save the environment and nature.”
Chabilal Das added to the gathering’s understanding by discussing the history of World Environment Day. He stressed that eco-friendly practices should be sustained year-round, not just on designated observance days. “Global warming and plastics pose a significant threat to the world,” he noted.
In line with government policies encouraging environmental stewardship, District Administration members urged attendees to plant saplings. They participated in planting efforts at Ashok Park, located in the town center, and distributed plants to local residents.
Similar programs were conducted across all Legislative Assembly Constituencies in Barpeta to commemorate World Environment Day, promoting a unified commitment to environmental protection.
