Harvard’s $2.5 Billion Funding Crisis Threatens National Security and Health Research
Harvard University is currently in conflict with the Trump administration and has requested a federal judge to issue a summary judgment to unfreeze $2.5 billion in funding that the government has blocked, which the university claims is an illegal action. In a filing to the US District Court in Boston, Harvard argued that after rejecting demands from the White House, the Trump administration issued 957 orders from April 14 onward to freeze research funding related to national security, cancer, and infectious diseases, as reported by Reuters.
President Trump has expressed his intention to force changes at Harvard and other American universities, particularly those in the Ivy League, criticizing them for adopting what he calls “woke” ideologies and becoming strongholds of antisemitism.
As part of its push for summary judgments, Harvard had its case scheduled for argument on July 21, where US District Judge Allison Burroughs will preside. The university initially sued the Trump administration in April, asserting that the funding freeze violated its rights to free speech and was arbitrary.
In the court documents, Harvard’s legal team indicated that the directives to freeze and terminate its research funds originated directly from the White House, which controlled the process and imposed arbitrary deadlines for these cuts. The university detailed that the frozen funds include $88 million intended for pediatric HIV research, $12 million aimed at enhancing the Defense Department’s awareness of emerging biological threats, and $8 million designated for dark energy research. Harvard maintained that these funding cuts could jeopardize critical research on infectious diseases, Parkinson’s, and cancer treatment.
Furthermore, last month the Trump administration rescinded Harvard’s authorization to enroll international students, though a US judge later blocked this action following a separate lawsuit filed by the university against the government.
