Urgent: Assam Flood Crisis Escalates as Brahmaputra Overflows, Jorhat Ferry Services Disrupted
The flood situation in Assam has escalated dramatically, as the Brahmaputra River has breached danger levels, inundating low-lying areas, notably Jorhat’s Nimati Ghat. Ferry services in these regions have been suspended due to the rising waters, exacerbating the connectivity issues faced by local residents.
State officials have reported that over 400,000 people across 17 districts are now affected by the relentless rainfall and flooding. The Cachar district has been particularly hard-hit, with more than 100,000 individuals displaced from their homes. Significant impacts have also been noted in Sribhumi and Nagaon, where approximately 85,000 and 62,000 people have been affected, respectively.
While some urban areas have seen a slight reduction in water levels, rural and flood-prone regions continue to face severe threats. Continuous heavy rainfall is hindering relief efforts and rescue operations, with disaster response teams on high alert.
In response, the Assam government has issued advisories urging residents in at-risk areas to relocate to higher ground and remain vigilant. With no immediate relief forecasted, there are growing concerns that the situation may worsen in the upcoming days.
