2026 Assam Assembly Polls: Gaurav Gogoi on the Upcoming Political Showdown
Gaurav Gogoi, the newly appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, stated that the party had declared its ultimate goal right after last year’s Lok Sabha elections: the focus will shift to the 2026 assembly polls. Arriving in Jorhat for the first time as state president, Gogoi emphasized that his new role is just a step toward that ambition, with the journey towards the 2026 elections having already commenced after the last general elections.
Gogoi was warmly welcomed at the airport by several party leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Debabrata Saikia, along with newly appointed working presidents Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar, and a significant number of Congress supporters.
When questioned about the alleged “lobby politics” within the party, Gogoi asserted that within Congress, “there is only the lobby of the people.” He indicated that the party’s agenda aims to liberate citizens from the fear of syndicates, corruption, and theft while addressing the aspirations of various tribes and communities across the state.
Additionally, he mentioned that pressing issues such as the ongoing flood situation in Guwahati and North Lakhimpur, as well as the erosion of freedom of expression, particularly for journalists, will also be focal points for the party.
Reflecting on his personal journey, Gogoi expressed that returning to Jorhat felt significant, as it is the place from where his late father, Tarun Gogoi, initiated his political career. He believes his father is watching over him and feels immense joy thinking of that legacy.
Gogoi thanked the people of Jorhat for electing him as their representative in the last Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing that his victory was crucial to his new responsibilities. He won the Jorhat seat by defeating the sitting MP, Topon Gogoi, by a substantial margin of 144,393 votes.
The support from Congress followers has been overwhelming, he noted, particularly from the politically neutral public. He plans to spend time at his family home in Jorhat before seeking blessings from the people of Kaliabor, where his political journey began.
After visiting Jorhat, Gogoi traveled to Titabor, historically represented by his father in the assembly for four terms, and on to Sivasagar for the night. His agenda includes meeting senior citizens in Sivasagar on Sunday before proceeding to Nagaon for another overnight stay. On Monday, he will engage with Congress workers in Nagaon, then head to Guwahati to visit the party headquarters.
On Tuesday, Gogoi will meet with party workers and take on his official duties as state Congress president. He has replaced Bhupen Borah in this role and is poised to lead the party in upcoming state elections as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been publicly criticizing him over his wife’s alleged links to Pakistan’s spy agency, the ISI.
