Amid rising optimism for summer travel, a recent Deloitte report reveals shifting consumer sentiment in response to economic turbulence. Initially, a survey conducted in late March indicated that 53% of respondents planned leisure vacations this summer, an increase from 48% in 2024. However, fears surrounding tariffs and stock market fluctuations led many to reconsider their budgets shortly after, suggesting a more cautious approach to spending.
The final findings show travelers now expect to spend an average of $4,606 this summer, which reflects a modest 13% increase from the previous year, down from the original forecast of 21% growth to $4,967. For their longest trip, anticipated expenditures have also decreased from $3,987 to $3,471-a mere 1% rise year-over-year.
Deloitte’s analysis, based on two surveys conducted from March 26 to April 9, highlighted a notable shift in consumer confidence and spending patterns, prompting the need for follow-up research. “We still see a strong summer travel season, but perhaps with a more frugal approach,” stated Kate Ferrara, Deloitte’s transportation, hospitality, and services sector leader.
Encouragingly for budget-conscious travelers, costs associated with travel have generally declined. A NerdWallet report indicates hotel room rates are down 2.4%, rental car expenses have decreased by 2.1%, and airfares have dropped by 7.9% since last year. Flight data from Hopper shows that average round-trip domestic airfare stands at $265, a 3% decline from 2024 and the lowest price in three years.
International travel also sees a downward trend, particularly for routes between the U.S. and Europe, where the average round-trip fare is now $850, down 8% from last summer, according to Hopper’s summer outlook. Despite these reductions, inflation continues to affect consumer spending, leaving travelers with less leftover cash for discretionary expenses.
The report further reveals that 34% of those scaling back their travel budgets plan to limit spending on activities once they arrive at their destinations. A significant number-30%—intend to stay with relatives instead of securing hotel accommodations, while 21% will opt for driving rather than flying.
Experts suggest that flexibility can unlock additional savings. “The root of all of our hacks for saving this summer is flexibility,” emphasized Hopper economist Hayley Berg. She advised travelers to avoid peak holiday weekends like the Fourth of July and Labor Day, when prices can surge by as much as 34%. Instead, consider planning trips for late August or early September when demand tends to lower.
Traveling during less busy days, particularly Tuesdays and Wednesdays, can yield savings of up to 20% on airfare. In specific terms, flying midweek may save vacationers around $67 on domestic flights and over $100 on international routes to Europe or Asia.
As consumers navigate these economic shifts, the summer travel landscape continues to evolve, revealing a blend of optimism tempered by caution. With careful planning and flexibility, travelers can still enjoy their vacations while managing their budgets effectively.
