Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the importance of transparency and integrity in the duties of tax department officials while serving taxpayers. In a statement shared on social media platform X, she remarked, “To provide service to the taxpayer is our duty. While so serving the taxpayers, transparency and integrity are crucial in earning their trust and confidence. I am confident that the Board and field formations will remain sensitive and responsive.”

Sitharaman’s comments came in response to an explanation provided by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) regarding a business entity that had applied for Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration. The application had faced delays, prompting the applicant to express concern.

The CBIC clarified that the delay was due to the taxpayer’s failure to respond to a specific query about the designation of the individual who signed on behalf of the company. In a statement on X, the CBIC noted that the application was submitted on May 26 and had been assigned to the Delhi State GST. They confirmed that the Central GST authorities were not involved in the matter.

According to the Delhi State GST authorities, the application was processed promptly, with a query raised regarding the missing designation of the signer on the Rent Agreement. The application number (ARN) was pending a response from the taxpayer, who had been duly informed of this status.

The CBIC stated that the application would be processed by the Delhi GST authorities once the necessary information was received. Additionally, they urged the applicant to refrain from spreading inaccurate information on social media without knowing the full facts.
