Who Are We? Bengalis: Courageous Bangladeshi Hindus Rally in Dhaka Amid Unreal Attacks, Awami League’s Powerful Videos Surface
Hindu Community in Dhaka Protests Against Rising Violence; Global Leaders Respond
Last Updated: August 09, 2024, 21:05 IST
Hundreds of Bangladeshi Hindus demonstrated in Dhaka on Friday in response to a sharp increase in attacks against minority communities following the departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government earlier this week. Protesters carried signs pleading for safety and chanted slogans like “Who are we? Bengali, Bengali,” as they gathered at a major intersection in the capital city.
Hindu temples, homes, and businesses have been targeted with vandalism, and several Hindu political leaders have been killed since Hasina, the long-standing leader of the Awami League, resigned and fled to India.
Protests intensified a day after Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, was sworn in as the head of a new interim government amid rising unrest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to Yunus, emphasizing the importance of restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh.
The situation has drawn international attention, with the UN condemning racially-motivated violence. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed strong opposition to any form of racial incitement to violence.
Two influential Indian-American Congressmen, Ro Khanna and Raja Krishnamoorthi, have called for an immediate end to the violence and urged Yunus to enforce the rule of law. They emphasized the need to protect the rights of the Hindu minority and hold perpetrators accountable. The US State Department also expressed grave concern, highlighting the necessity for thorough investigations and justice for victims of the ongoing unrest.
