Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has nominated Luis Montenegro as Prime Minister following recent legislative elections. This decision comes after consultations with various parliamentary parties and reflects the outcome of the May 18 snap elections.
Montenegro, who leads the Democratic Alliance (AD) and is also the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), was invited to form a government after the AD coalition secured the most seats in the elections, though it did not achieve an absolute majority. The appointment will become official once the final election results are confirmed and the newly elected Assembly of the Republic convenes for its first session.
Support for Montenegro’s nomination was bolstered by meetings with Andre Ventura, leader of the far-right Chega party, and Carlos Cesar from the Socialist Party (PS). Notably, the PS experienced a historic decline, dropping to third place in Parliament, a development seen as unprecedented and potentially damaging to its political standing.
In the recent elections, Chega won 60 seats, surpassing the PS, while the AD secured 91 seats in the 230-member legislature. Although the AD is short of a majority, it is anticipated to lead a minority government with conditional support from either Chega or the PS.
President Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that Montenegro received the mandate to form a government only after both Chega and the PS assured their support for the new administration, aiming to create a stable governance environment.
Portugal, characterized as a parliamentary republic, conducted its third snap election within four years on May 18, following the president’s dissolution of Parliament on March 13.
