Top politicians and notable figures from Panama gathered on May 29 for a reception hosted by Indian Ambassador to Panama, Sumit Seth, honoring the visiting Indian Parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. During the event, Panama’s Foreign Minister, Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez, voiced strong opposition to terrorism and expressed support for India as the delegation concluded its visit to the Central American nation.
Tharoor shared on X that the trip wrapped up with an impressive reception for the diplomatic corps and influential Panamanian personalities. Both the Foreign Minister and Vice-Minister Carlos Hoyos conveyed deep sympathy for India, emphasizing the importance of enhancing cooperation between the two nations in the fight against terrorism.
Amidst posed photographs with various attendees, Tharoor noted the value of engaging with a diverse segment of Panama’s diplomatic community at the Ambassador’s reception. He highlighted the presence of key figures such as Genesis Alonjo, a member of Parliament for 2019-2024; Lorena Castillo de Valera, a former First Lady; Mehr Eliezer, Miss Panama 2019 and a budding politician; along with Kathy Bhiku and Milena Alvarado, who played significant roles in the success of the mission.
In his speech, Tharoor articulated the main messages the Indian delegation aimed to communicate globally. The delegation also visited the historic Panama Canal, which the United States operated from 1914 until Panama regained control on December 31, 1999. This past January marked 25 years since the handover, an important milestone for the country.
Tharoor remarked on X, “We could not conclude our sojourn without a brief visit to the Panama Canal – truly an engineering marvel a century ago, and still breathtaking to see a giant ship being raised and lowered at one of the locks.”
Earlier in the visit, the Indian Parliamentary delegation met with President of Panama, Jose Raul Mulino, at the Presidential Palace, where Mulino reaffirmed Panama’s support for India and its stance against terrorism.
