A team at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital has achieved a remarkable victory in the fight against acute kidney injury, successfully treating a critically ill seven-month-old baby girl, Adrija Debnath. According to a press release from the Health Department, Adrija, the daughter of Abhijit Debnath, was first admitted to the Pediatric Department on May 13 after suffering from a week-long bout of high fever and bloody diarrhea. Her condition was alarming upon admission, characterized by symptoms such as reduced urine output, dark urine, facial swelling, refusal to eat, and severe physical weakness.
Recognizing the seriousness of her situation, doctors promptly moved Adrija to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICO) with the aim of stabilizing her condition. Initial blood tests indicated dangerously high levels of urea (150 mg/dL) and creatinine (2.1 mg/dL), along with significant anemia (hemoglobin at 6 g/dL) and a low platelet count. These indicators suggested a diagnosis of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a rare but grave condition that can lead to acute kidney failure in children. Despite initial stabilization efforts, Adrija’s health worsened, leading to a complete halt in urine output and further increases in urea and creatinine levels. The need for peritoneal dialysis arose, prompting her parents to consider treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata. However, the exorbitant costs-Rs 70,000 per night, totaling an estimated Rs 15 lakh for the entire treatment-forced the lower-middle-class family to return to Agartala.
On May 19, the child was readmitted to GB Hospital in a critical condition. Her urea levels had soared to 295 mg/dL, with creatinine spiking to 6.3 mg/dL and hemoglobin plummeting to a life-threatening 3.5 g/dL. Upon receiving consent from the parents, medical professionals initiated emergency peritoneal dialysis and blood transfusions under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Srivas Das.
Adrija’s health gradually improved, and by May 26, she was stable enough to be transferred to the general pediatric ward. Her urea levels had decreased to 1 mg/dL, creatinine to 0.6 mg/dL, and hemoglobin improved to 9.4 g/dL. In a positive turn of events, all medical expenses were fully covered by the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) schemes, alleviating the financial burden on her family.
The medical team responsible for Adrija’s care included Associate Professor Dr. Srivas Das, a pediatric specialist, Assistant Professor Dr. Chayan Chakma, Senior Resident Dr. Chandana S, and PGT doctors Dr. Pranab Reang, Saugat Saha, and Dr. Atek. Their dedication and expertise played a crucial role in the recovery of this young patient.
