KHNAM Urges Transparency in Recruitment: A Call for Fair Practices

Shillong, May 28: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has urged the Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to establish a transparent and equitable recruitment process within the council. In a statement to reporters following a meeting with KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Shemborlang Rynjah on Wednesday, KHNAM working president Thomas Passah expressed concern over the council’s ongoing failure to advertise job vacancies or conduct exams for filling open positions.

Passah highlighted that the EC typically issues internal notifications for roles such as magistrates, under secretaries, and accountants, but these announcements are circulated only among current employees, effectively restricting access for the broader public. “We have urged the CEM to ensure that all future job vacancies are widely advertised through newspapers and various media platforms so that eligible candidates have a fair chance to apply,” Passah stated.

He emphasized the necessity of written examinations as part of the hiring process to guarantee that only qualified individuals are selected, which he believes would greatly enhance the council’s overall effectiveness and administration. Additionally, Passah raised alarms regarding the insufficient pay for casual and daily wage workers employed by the council. He questioned the ongoing underpayment of these workers, especially after a Labour Department notification in January mandated appropriate compensation.

According to Passah, the fixed monthly salary of Rs 5,000 for these employees is unreasonably low, particularly in light of the rising costs of essential commodities. “We have conveyed that casual and daily wage employees deserve a decent and fair salary that reflects current market realities,” he added.
