Smuggling of narcotic substances from Myanmar continues unabated in the northeastern states of India, with security forces seizing drugs worth Rs 9.70 crore in Manipur and Mizoram and apprehending four drug peddlers, officials reported on Wednesday. A Defence spokesman indicated that a mobile vehicle check post was set up by the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police in the Teikhang area of Mizoram’s Saitual district on Tuesday night, responding to specific intelligence concerning drug trafficking.
During this operation, two individuals riding Chinese-made Kenbo bikes were intercepted, resulting in the seizure of 758 grams of heroin valued at approximately Rs 5.30 crore. In a separate incident in neighboring Manipur, Assam Rifles, in collaboration with state police, executed a search operation in Koide, Senapati district, aimed at curbing drug trafficking. This operation yielded 2.2 kg of brown sugar concealed in 220 soap cases, worth Rs 4.40 crore, and led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be involved in narcotics-related activities.
This successful joint initiative underscores the commitment of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police to combat the drug crisis and ensure peace and security in the region, the spokesman noted. The seized substances and the arrested individuals were handed over to police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Additionally, two individuals were arrested on the outskirts of Aizawl on Monday with drugs valued at Rs 4 crore. Officials from the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department, supported by the Young Mizo Association’s anti-drugs squad, confiscated two kg of heroin and 9.8 kg of methamphetamine tablets.
As is often the case, the drugs seized in Mizoram and Manipur were smuggled from Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states: Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. This area remains a critical transit point for drugs, particularly heroin and methamphetamine, entering India.
