Antonio Conte made history as Napoli clinched the Serie A title by defeating Cagliari at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Friday night. With this victory, Conte became the first manager to win the Serie A championship with three different clubs, marking a significant milestone in his career.
This triumph represents Conte’s fifth title in Italy’s top flight, positioning him as the third-most successful manager in Serie A history, just behind Giovanni Trapattoni and Massimiliano Allegri, who each have seven titles. Notably, both of those coaches secured one title with AC Milan, while their remaining championships were achieved with Juventus.
Conte’s journey to this achievement began with his first Serie A title with Juventus in 2012, ending a nearly ten-year drought for the club. Under his leadership, Juventus went on to win a total of three consecutive titles during which he was honored as Italian Coach of the Year each season. After his Juventus stint, Conte became Italy’s national team coach, leading the Azzurri until the conclusion of Euro 2016. His subsequent foray into the Premier League saw him winning both the Premier League and FA Cup with Chelsea. However, a lack of success in securing Champions League football led to his departure from the Blues.
Inter Milan then welcomed Conte, and he quickly returned them to glory, guiding the team to its first Serie A title in 11 years in 2021. Known for his tactical acumen, particularly his three-man defensive setup, Conte’s fiery press conferences have often sparked controversy at clubs he has managed. His time at Tottenham Hotspur ended dramatically after he publicly criticized his players’ commitment following a draw with Southampton in March 2023.
“Tottenham’s story is this. For twenty years, there has been this owner, and they have never won anything, but why?” Conte remarked, alluding to the club’s struggles under its ownership. Just a week after his outburst, he was dismissed from Spurs.
Following a brief lull in his managerial career, Conte was once again called upon by an Italian club-this time, Napoli. The team had recently secured its first Scudetto in 33 years under Luciano Spalletti, but faced a significant exodus of key players soon after. With a new challenge ahead, Conte took charge and successfully brought the title back to Napoli in his very first season, solidifying his legacy as one of Italy’s greatest managers.
“I’m happy in Naples and I’m working for fans who give me something emotionally. That’s very important,” Conte shared, emphasizing the expectations that come with being his coach. “People hire me and think ‘you have to finish first or second, even if you finished 10th the year before, and you have to fight for the title; qualifying for Europe isn’t enough.’”
Despite his success, Conte’s tenure at clubs tends to be brief. He averages just 1.33 years per club and has managed over 50 games for only five out of the eleven teams he has worked with. As he continues to make waves in Italian football, the future seems bright for both Conte and Napoli.
