Tripura police have arrested a young man in the West Tripura district following the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl. The arrest was made by the West Agartala Women Police on Saturday after the victim’s mother lodged a complaint.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on May 9 when the girl was at a neighbor’s house. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accused threatened the child, warning her not to tell anyone about the crime. Out of fear, the girl remained silent until May 17, when she started experiencing physical issues and eventually confided in her mother.
A police officer stated, “The girl’s mother filed a complaint at the West Agartala women’s police station on May 19, which led to the booking and subsequent arrest of the accused.” The suspect was presented in court on Saturday.
This incident follows another case from the previous week, where Tripura police arrested six youths, including four minors, for their alleged roles in the gang rape of a minor girl in the South Tripura district.
Additionally, a report from the Tripura Home Department reveals alarming statistics for 2023-24, with 144 reported rapes and 31 women murdered in the state. During this time, police registered 140 rape cases and 30 murder cases. Authorities apprehended 39 suspects in connection with these murder cases.
