U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance on Apple’s manufacturing locations, asserting that iPhones sold in the United States must be produced domestically. During a recent event with business leaders in Doha, Qatar, Trump emphasized that if Apple does not produce iPhones in America, the company could face tariffs of at least 25%. He communicated this directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook, stating, “I informed Tim Cook of Apple a long time ago that the iPhones sold in America will be made in America, not in India or anywhere else. If that doesn’t happen, Apple will have to pay a tariff of at least 25%.”
Trump’s remarks highlight his preference against Apple manufacturing products in India. He conveyed to Tim Cook that there was no necessity for Apple to establish factories there. Despite this, Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer, has invested approximately $1.49 billion in India, signaling the company’s ongoing commitment to expanding its operations.
In a recent interview, Tim Cook noted that 50% of iPhones sold in the U.S. market are currently manufactured in India. He indicated that by the second quarter of the year, India will be recognized as the primary source for iPhones sold in the U.S. Cook also mentioned that other products like AirPods and the Apple Watch are predominantly produced in Vietnam.
From March 2024 to March 2025, Apple is projected to manufacture iPhones worth about $22 billion in India, marking a significant 60% increase from the previous year. During this timeframe, Apple expects to export iPhones valued at approximately $17.4 billion from India. Presently, one in every five iPhones worldwide is made in India, with production facilities located in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
