Tragic Loss: Kolkata Boy’s Heartbreaking End After Mistaken Chip Theft Leads to Pesticide Poisoning
A tragic incident in Panskura, Paschim Medinipur district, has shaken the local community following the death of a 12-year-old boy. Krishendu Das, a seventh grader, allegedly consumed pesticide after he was accused of stealing a packet of chips from a local store. The distressing event unfolded when the boy, unable to locate the shopkeeper, Subhankar Dikshit, reportedly took a packet of chips from the shop at Gosaiber Bazar on Thursday evening.
According to a police officer, Krishendu had repeatedly called out to the shopkeeper, expressing his intent to purchase the chips, but received no response. Following this, he left the store with one packet of chips. Upon returning, Dikshit allegedly slapped Krishendu in public and forced him to do sit-ups as punishment for the alleged theft, a detail corroborated by a complaint from the grieving family.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Krishendu’s mother was summoned to the scene. Instead of comfort, she chastised her son, even slapping him as he tried to explain that he had found the packet on the ground and planned to pay for it later. The boy, embarrassed and upset, returned home with his mother, locked himself in his room, and did not respond when she called him.
Concerned after some time, Krishendu’s mother, along with neighbors, broke down the door to find her son in a critical state. He was found frothing at the mouth, with a half-empty bottle of pesticide beside him. Next to him lay a note in Bengali, which read, “Maa, I am not a thief. I did not steal. Uncle was not around. I found a Kurkure packet lying on the road and picked it up. I love Kurkure.” The note concluded with an expression of remorse for his actions: “These are my final words before leaving. Please excuse me for this act.”
Krishendu was rushed to Tamluk Hospital but tragically succumbed shortly after admission to the ICU. Reports indicate that Dikshit, the shop owner and a civic volunteer affiliated with the Bengal Police, initially denied any assault. However, since the incident garnered public attention, he has reportedly become unreachable as a crowd gathered outside his shop.
The police are actively investigating the incident, seeking to ascertain the full details surrounding the events that led to this heartbreaking tragedy. The case has sparked widespread outrage and discussions about the treatment of children and the consequences of bullying, underscoring the need for greater compassion and understanding within our communities.
As the investigation unfolds, the local community grapples with the shock of losing a young life over an incident that has raised serious questions about accountability and empathy.
