Kohima: The Association of Power Engineers Nagaland (APEN) convened its general conference on Wednesday at the Engineer-in-Chief (Power) conference hall in Kohima. The event welcomed K.G. Kenye, the Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs of Nagaland, as the special guest, alongside Asangla Imti, IAS, the Secretary for Power. Er. Neiyie Neikha, Vice President of APEN, chaired the program, which opened with an invocation prayer by Er. Moameren, Superintending Engineer (T).

In his speech, Minister Kenye expressed appreciation for the commitment and hard work of power engineers in the state. He noted that while other states focus on billing practices tied to consistent power supply, Nagaland remains dedicated to restoring services during outages. He criticized the prevalent approach of minimum billing as detrimental, arguing it discourages responsible energy consumption and complicates the implementation of smart prepaid meters.

Kenye emphasized the advantages of the Rooftop Solar PMSG-MBY initiative by the Government of India, highlighting its capacity to lower consumer bills. He called for a shift towards local power generation projects to resolve the state’s power shortages, urging engineers to fully collaborate in this essential task.

APEN President Er. Kasho Chishi urged members to consider their professional responsibilities and to adhere to engineering ethics. He stressed the need for continuous learning and strategic planning within generation, transmission, and distribution sectors. Chishi also recommended reforms and structural adjustments in the state’s power sector, advocating for regular workforce reviews to enhance efficiency.

Secretary (Power) Asangla Imti commended the engineers for their capabilities and dedication to service. She encouraged them to adopt technological advancements and move away from outdated manual processes. Emphasizing the importance of smart prepaid metering under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and the Rooftop Solar scheme, she noted both initiatives would provide significant benefits to consumers.

During the conference, a new team of office bearers for the 2025–2028 term was inaugurated. This new leadership includes Er. Mhonlumo Kikon as President, Er. Kikrusenuo Chielie as Vice President, Er. Y. Akito Sema as General Secretary, Er. Kekhriesalhou Keyho and Er. Sungkumlemba Jamir as Joint Secretaries, Er. Namheu Khate Zeliang as Treasurer, and Er. Neiteii Mero as PRO.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Er. N. Myingthungo Ngullie.
